Welcoming tauira back

5 September 2024

Welcoming tauira back to class after the mid-semester break can help increase student engagement.

Establishing and maintaining instructor presence is an important part of teaching. Announcements are one tool that can help you do this. In a previous tip, we talked about different ways you can use announcements to increase student engagement.

Remember that announcements do not always have to be written text. Consider using audio and/or video as well. See our previous tips on how to create welcome and introduction videos for your course, and how to make videos more engaging.

Some topics that you could cover include:

  • Assessment update - let tauira know where are you at with marking any assessment submitted before the break and what the next piece of assessment is.
  • Respond to tauira feedback - let tauira know what feedback you received before the break (e.g. through your student rep and any mid-semester feedback you collected) and what your response is (e.g. what changes are you making and why). Refer to our previous tip on making changes based on student feedback.
  • Provide feedback on engagement with recordings and readings - see our previous tip on using data analytics in Panopto and Leganto.
  • Reminding tauira of support services on campus including Learning Advisors, Inclusive Education, and Career Centre.
