Reflections on, and assessment of, your teaching

29 November 2023

"Reflections on, and assessment of your teaching including self-reflection and improvements" is one of four sections in the Teaching and Facilitation of Learning achievement area in the Promotion Process.

Hopefully, you have now had some time to reflect on your Semester 2 teaching and discuss this with colleagues. Discussing and documenting your reflection will help you with:

  • Writing the Course Improvements section in your 2024 Course Outline
  • Setting objectives and key result indicators for the PD&A process
  • Identifying professional development opportunities
  • Reviewing your course and/or teaching practice
  • Seeking support from Teaching Quality
  • Working with the Learning Advisors to develop a tailored workshop or resource to suit your students and your course assessment
  • Preparing your Teaching Portfolio for the Promotion process

A Teaching Portfolio is a yearly record and cumulative record of your teaching activities and results. For Promotion purposes, it should consist of four sections:

  • Your approach to teaching and facilitation of learning (including Honours and Masters by Coursework supervision).
  • Your teaching and facilitation of learning contributions including scholarly work, communities of practice and leadership contributions.
  • Reflections on, and assessment of, your teaching including self-reflection and improvements.
  • Supporting documentation (Appendices).

"Reflections on, and assessment of, your teaching including self-reflection and improvements" asks you to detail your student evaluations, other evaluations, awards, and self-review. Your self-review should be a reflection of your effectiveness as an educator, and future plans related to further development of your teaching and/or supervision skills.

When documenting your self-reflection, also look at "Your teaching and facilitation of learning contributions" and outline, among other things, what activities you have undertaken to improve your teaching and facilitation of learning. This might include professional development, changes to your courses or supervision, and responses to problems that have arisen during your teaching and/or supervision.

For assistance with preparing your Teaching Portfolio, see our workshop material. You can also contact Teaching Quality (teaching.quality@lincoln.ac.nz) to book a time to discuss or come and see us at one of our weekly drop-in times.
