FAQs
How do I find Maths & Stats resources?
The Maths and Stats section (Maths and Stats :: Te Kete Wānaka) includes links to Maths and Stats resources, research design and scientific calculators. In addition, there are links to resources for Excel and the different statistical analysis software provided by Lincoln University.
There are links for:
Maths resources, Statistics, Research Design, Scientific Calculators, Excel for Statistics and Statistical analysis software.
Math Resources includes links to "Maths is Fun" and "Maths First".
Statistics includes videos made specifically for LU students on: Understanding Statistics, parts one & two; Alternative Statistical Methods; and factsheets on a large variety of statistical methods.
Research Design provides a video for LU students, introducing some of the main concepts of good, robust research design.
Calculators provides the user manuals and practice sheets for the most common makes of scientific calculators.
How do I do a graph or descriptive statistics in Excel?
There are many different functions in Excel. We have developed introductory videos to help with creating descriptive statistics and graphing in Excel. This includes a data set for practice. There are also additional videos for other Excel topics.
This is a good place to start if you have to use Excel in an assessment.
How do I access the statistical analysis software?
Computers on campus usually have the four main statistical analysis software packages downloaded. If the package you require is not already on the computer you can go to the Software Center (ITHELP - Software - Home) from the campus computer and search for the software you require.
If you require a statistical package on your own laptop you will need to talk to your post graduate supervisor (undergraduates may not have this option). This is because of licensing requirements.
What statistical packages are available?
There are four main statistical analysis software packages available: Minitab, Genstat, SPSS and R (or R-Studio). The introductory videos, with their associated practice data sets are available at: Statistical Analysis Software :: Te Kete Wānaka.
Minitab: An introduction to using this programme for graphing and statistical analyses, mainly for quantitative type data. This package is very user friendly with an excellent help function.
Genstat: An introduction to using this programme for graphing and statistical analyses. This is a powerful package for statistics, mainly for quantitative type data.
SPSS: An introduction to using this programme for graphing and statistical analyses. This is a powerful package for statistics for quantitative and qualitative type data.
R: This is an advanced statistical software package which requires some knowledge of software commands. The introductory video demonstrates how to download and update the package and install some software to change the programme from requiring commands to having drop-down menus, similar to the three other statistical analysis packages.
