Your approach to teaching and facilitation of learning

6 December 2023

Following last week's tip on Reflection and how this contributes to your Teaching Portfolio, this week we focus on telling your story through your "Approach to teaching and facilitation of learning".

"Your approach to teaching and facilitation of learning" is one of four sections in the Teaching and Facilitation of Learning achievement area in the Promotions process. The focus is on your Philosophy and your Teaching goals, strategies and evaluation methods

Philosophy

We explored Developing your Teaching Philosophy in an earlier tip. In your Teaching Portfolio for Promotion purposes, you need to include statements that address each of the following:

  • Your teaching philosophy, and your views about students, learning and teaching
  • Examples of the purpose, aims and outcomes for the courses you examine or contribute to
  • Your approach to project-based education, particularly for work integrated learning, Honours or Masters by Coursework supervision
  • Your approach to incorporating Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations and Mātauraka Māori in programme and course materials
  • How your courses contribute to your students’ achievements in their Lincoln University programmes
Teaching goals, strategies and evaluation methods

Outline your stated teaching and facilitation of learning goals, strategies and evaluation methods and include documentation to support these. Suggestions include:

  • Examples of course content, special notes, study guides, portfolio of student work relevant to your teaching methods
  • Descriptions/explanations of your teaching and supervision methods
  • Procedures to assess or evaluate student learning or the quality and impact of your teaching and supervision
  • Teaching developments you have initiated, and where possible, evidence of the effectiveness and impact of these developments
  • How you address biculturalism and Mātauraka Māori in programme and course materials
  • Scholarly or research activities related to teaching and student learning

Preparing your Teaching Portfolio takes time. We recommend using this Teaching Portfolio Notes file to help you capture ideas and draft your statements for each section. For assistance with preparing your Teaching Portfolio, see our past workshop material and look out for our next workshop in May 2024. You can also contact Teaching Quality (teaching.quality@lincoln.ac.nz) to book a time to discuss your Teaching Portfolio or come and see us at one of our weekly drop-in times.
