Artificial Intelligence (AI) usage in Assessment: Providing guidance for students

27 September 2023

When designing assessments, it is important that you determine what is appropriate or inappropriate in terms of student use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The position of the Proctor is to reinforce whatever you determine is appropriate for your course. Thus, it is important that this is clearly communicated to students.

In addition to what is included in the Course Outline template under the section on Academic Integrity, we recommend that specific wording be included in Assessment instructions. The template wording (below) should be edited as necessary to suit the circumstances of your course and assessment.

Also refer to the AI and Chat GPT in Teaching: Opportunities and Challenges resource available for staff on Teaching at Lincoln, and the guidance for students on the Referencing page of Te Kete Wānaka.

For guidance on assessment design, refer to the Assessment page on Te Kete Wānaka, attend a Teaching Support drop-in, or contact Teaching Quality.

AI Usage

Prohibited

No additional software, tools, or services may be used by students to assist them in answering test questions, in part or as a whole, other than those provided by the University. This includes any non-University approved translation, writing, or answer generation products or services, such as AI. Test answers will be analysed for evidence of the use of AI and penalties may be administered.

Permitted

The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, to write answers for this test is permitted only if usage is acknowledged. Include a statement with each answer that states which AI tool(s) were used, how they were used, and the prompts used to generate the output. If you have quoted or paraphrased the AI generated output, provide an in-text citation using the format: (Name of tool, Month day, year).

Answers will be analysed for evidence of the use of AI and penalties may be administered if appropriate acknowledgements and in-text citations have not been provided.

Assignments, Projects, Reports and other take-home assessments

Include this information as part of your assessment instructions on your Akoraka | Learn course page.
